Kawasaki disease is a rare disorder in children that causes inflammation of the blood vessels. This disease occurs most often in Japan, where it was first discovered. In the United States it is the second most common cause of pediatric heart disease, second only to congenital heart defects. Most patients are young than five years old. The cause of this disease has not yet been determined, though it may be an autoimmune disorder.
Symptoms
- High fever
- Bloodshot or red eyes
- Bright red, chapped, lips
- Strawberry tongue
- Swollen hands and feet
- Skin rashes
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Joint pain and swelling
Treatment
- Intravenous gamma globulin
- High-dose aspirin
- Steroids
