Polychondritis is a disease that results in deterioration of cartilage, a collagen-based tissue found throughout the body. Any cartilage can be affected, but this disease often attacks several specific areas while leaving others unaffected. Most often affected are the ears, nose, throat, heart valves, joints, and rib cage. This condition can lead to other disorders, like vasculitis. The cause of this disease is unknown.
