An ulcer occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, and is usually acidic and extremely painful. Many ulcers are caused by a bacterial infection, though some are caused by tumors. There are five different classifications of ulcers. Most often ulcers occur in the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. Complications from an ulcer can include gastrointestinal bleeding, perforation, penetration, or cancer.
